1. Pause and Ask Yourself Questions

Okay, so maybe the last thing you want to do when in the midst of a stressful situation is to pause and ask yourself a question but that is exactly what you should do.

When you come across a stressful situation or find yourself feeling stressed, pause for a second.

And ask yourself a few questions.

  • What about this situation is making me feel stressed?
  • What can I do to make this situation less stressful?
  • What is one task I can focus on right here and now to make this larger task less stressful?
  • Where do I need to put my focus right now to reduce the stress?

The list of questions could go on and on.

But seriously.

If you’re stressed about a big project coming up it could be because you are looking at the big picture, everything that needs to be done.

That can leave you feeling stressed and overwhelmed to the max.

Pause, and look at the one task you need to complete today.

Then do the same tomorrow.

If you’re in an argument where a lot is being thrown at you at once and you’re feeling stress rise in your chest, pause.

Ask yourself, what you need to do right now to get a clearer head at this moment; and walk away if needed.

Of course, communicate this to whoever you’re arguing with but you get the idea.

Asking yourself questions will take you out of the stressful situation and help you find a solution to it instead of sitting in it for hours or even days at a time.

 

2. Dance, Jog, Walk, Move!

Stress is stuck and stagnant energy in the body and it needs to be released.

Think about any time you got really heated in an argument and then went and walked it off.

Chances are you felt a lot better and could literally feel the anger melt from your body.

Movement, in general, helps to move that stuck energy through your body and helps to clear your mind so that you can think more clearly in times of higher stress.

And if you think you have to run 3 miles every day to relieve stress, that’s not what I’m saying.

Do whatever type of movement makes you feel better.

Whether that’s having a dance party, walking around your neighborhood, having a full-blown punching bag session or skipping through the streets.

Just move.

 

3. Release Past Negative Emotions

Maybe a little different but hear me out.

The first time someone cuts you off while driving, chances are you’re not that upset. A little thrown off and maybe slightly annoyed but you move on.

But the 100th time is enough to send you into a full-blown crimson red rage. 

Why?

Because you’re remembering and recalling the 99 times before this time you were cut off. They all piled up on top of each other to create this giant ball of repressed emotions.

It’s the same with stress.

Every time something made you stressed unless you released it in a healthy way, it continues to pile on top of itself. Making you even more stressed.

Here are some healthy ways to release past negative emotions including stress:

  • Journal it out – Seriously. Just the act of writing an angry letter or email you’ll never send is enough to help you release it because you are giving voice to the emotion instead of ignoring it.
  • Vent to a friend – Sometimes you just need a good ol’ fashioned vent session with a trusted pal. Again, giving voice to your feelings and in turn releasing them.
  • Practice forgiveness – At a young age we are told emotions are either good or bad and as adults having a range of emotions we can beat ourselves up about them. Forgive yourself for feeling, forgive the situation that triggered that feeling, and move forward.
  • EFT, Meditation, or Hypnosis – These are all ways to let go of old emotions in a more holistic approach.

The point is, don’t let old stuck emotions pile up.

Release them by giving voice to them and then let them go. You don’t need them anymore.

 

4. Meditation/Hypnosis

Thoughts are like clouds covering the sun.

They’re not going to last forever and they move in and out as they need to.

But if you focus all your time on them and attach to each one that comes by, you’ll continue the cycle of stress you’re feeling.

  • Read your favorite book
  • Take a bubble bath with lavender
  • Put on your favorite silk PJs
  • Watch a binge-worthy Netflix show or movie
  • Cook up your favorite meal while having a dance party in the kitchen
  • Cover your body with your favorite lotion
  • Allow yourself to feel whatever emotions you need to feel
  • Journal
  • Laugh…a lot
  • Listen to music

 

 

6. Watch your Words

What you say can have a big impact on how you feel.

Oftentimes when in a stressful situation or when we’re feeling stressed we use a lot of generalizations.

“This always happens.”

“They do this all time.”

“Doing it that way never works.”

Really?

Always?

All the time?

Never?

These words take away your power to figure out a solution by slapping on the label that if it happened even once before it’ll always happen the exact same way in the future.

And since your subconscious mind is like a supercomputer finding everything it possibly can to make sure you’re right, you will just see more evidence of that being true.

Even if it’s not.

The words you choose can either empower you or push you further down the hole of stress, worry, frustration, and overwhelm.

Choose them carefully.
