How to Reduce stress during the Holidays

Whether it’s making a fancy dinner for 50 of your closest friends and family, gritting your teeth through the crowds of last-minute mall-goers or simply trying to get your kids to put their phones down for five minutes while grandpa gives his famous holiday speech, the holidays can be quite stressful.

But it doesn’t have to be as long as you equipped yourself with the tools and tips!

If you’re ready to reduce and minimize holiday stress, grab your popcorn and hot cocoa and let me do all the talking!

First things first, take some time for yourself

Is this a bit cliche?

Yeah maybe, but it’s true!

You’ve heard it before, you can’t pour from an empty cup and let’s face it, you literally can’t…I mean seriously…there’s nothing in there!

When holiday stress consumes us the last thing we are thinking about is ourselves. But doing so only furthers our stress.

So this year, take some time for yourself. Take a bubble bath, read your favorite book, go to the gym.

Whatever will benefit you the most and trust me, you will feel a million times better.

Get organized

That’s right.

The key to avoiding stress is to be organized and know exactly what needs to be done and when!

Take time to sit and write down all the fun holiday activities you’d like to do with your friends and family this year.

This way, you won’t forget any and you’ll have some really fun ideas in your back pocket.

Of course, I don’t mean schedule out every single little thing, but just having activities written down and scheduled will reduce some stress around this time of year!

Not only that, it will keep everyone busy and enjoying themselves!

Also, make sure to make gift lists to help you when you do venture out into the crowds to purchase gifts.

Having an organized list of exactly what to buy will not only help you save a ton of time, but it will also allow you avoid some of those overly crowded stores.

Delegate tasks

This is an important one if you are hosting your holiday gatherings this year!

Don’t be afraid to ask for help and delegate out which tasks need to be done. While you’re cooking, another family member can be cleaning the house or setting the table.

The point here is, you don’t’ have to do everything yourself and why not make a game out of it.

Have fun setting up with your family and enjoy the time spent together instead of stressing.

Use this time to make memories, share recipes and enjoy the time spent with your family and friends!

Shop online and do it early

Shopping online not only saves a massive amount of time but it’s the perfect way to reduce stress during the holidays.

You can find pretty much anything you want online nowadays and you won’t have to deal with long lines or angry customers.

I find the best time to buy gifts if you are looking for some really incredible deals is on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Be flexible and go with the flow

 Not everything is going to go perfectly during the holidays but the more we stress about it, the more stressful it will become.

Remember at the end of the day, the holidays are about holding your loved ones close and cherishing the time you do get to spend with them.

    1. Thank you Sina! As soon as my plans get written down on paper, I can see it and say, ” yes, this is manageable”:) I agree too, that making that “me” time is a challenge. Just 5-10 mins a day can make a difference!

  7. This is a great list! My anxiety always seems to spike this time of year. Sometimes I just need a little reminder that, as much as I want to make it great for everyone else, I need to make it great for me too. 🙂

  10. Why are the holidays always so stressful? I think you nailed it with your tips for reducing stress. I especially like the one about shopping online early. I do almost all my shopping online these days – just to avoid the crowds. But I don’t do it early (not all of it, anyway) … and that creates a lot of my stress – especially when delivery times are slowed down (they always are during the Christmas season)! I’m going to have to remember this for next year. 🙂

    1. We love the holidays, but on top of everything else we do on a daily basis are the additional holiday “To-do” lists. Online shopping has helped with some of the shopping stressors, but it can be so hard to wait for items to finally arrive at our doorstep. I always wave and say a big thank you if I see the delivery person! So appreciate them! Keeping in mind the later delivery times, I may have to shop online much earlier next year too:)
