Everyone wants to be happy.
So we go in search of it. Like a commodity.
We look for it in our jobs, in our relationships, in the things we buy, the food we eat, the places we go, but very rarely do we look for it within ourselves.
And to make matters harder, we don’t use the right questions to “find it”.
What we don’t know is that asking ourselves questions is one of the most important things we can possibly do.
For our own happiness, to help us understand what we want out of life, to learn and grow.
But most of us are doing it wrong.
“The quality of your life is determined by the quality of the questions you ask.”
Seriously, if you want to be happier, feel more fulfilled in your life, embody confidence, reach your goals and grab onto the success you’ve always wanted, it all starts with the questions you are asking yourself.
“Happy” is already inside of you.
These questions are here to help you uncover it.
How To Be Happy: 5 Questions You Should Asking Yourself Now
1. What do I want?
So simple and yet, so often we forget to ask this of ourselves.
What do I want?
Notice I didn’t mention anything about your parents, your brother, your dog, your teachers, your whatever, whoever.
This question isn’t for them.
It’s for you.
And it’s a question that will radiate and ripple throughout your entire life.
You could sit here and ponder this question all day. For weeks or months even. But really, you’re looking for your gut response.
The one that comes from your heart, not from your head.
Spoiler alert, Intuition always wins. Listen to that one.
2. Where am I in relation to where I want to be?
Again, another very simple question, at least on the outside but sometimes we see this question and hide from it because then we have to look at how far away we are from our goals and desires.
Here’s how I see it.
You’re riding in a car and you fall asleep.
Two hours later you wake up and ask the person driving one simple question.
“Where are we?”
This question is imperative in helping you get to where you want to be.
Like a GPS system, you must figure out what you want, and also figure out where you are currently.
The distance doesn’t matter.
A road map is a road map, you will get there regardless of how long it takes.
But I can guarantee you this, you will get to where you want to go a whole lot faster if you know where you are first.
3. How Much Money Do I Need to Have What It Is I Want?
Money might not be able to “buy happiness” because well, happiness isn’t’ a thing that you can go to the store and pick up off the shelf.
But, people tend to be quite a bit happier when they know their needs are met financially.
And choosing to put your head in the sand and ignore the fact that in this physical world we live in requires money to live, isn’t helping you or anyone else.
I do want to point that, yes, you can, of course, choose to happy no matter what your pockets or bank accounts have to say and I recommend that but I’m talking about big happiness, the kind of happiness that flows into other people’s cups.
So I ask again, how much do you need to have whatever it is you want?
Does living by a body of water so that you can watch the sunset make you happy?
Maybe rolling into the bowling ally with a brand new set of shoes does.
Or possibly, riding down main street with your new foster pup in the front seat of your new Tesla makes you squeal with joy. On the inside.
Look, money is not a good or bad thing, it just is.
It’s an exchange.
The quicker you overcome that, the happier you will be.
4. Who Do I Need to Be To Have What I Want?
Who you are BEING, is a lot more important on your road trip to happiness than what you are doing.
You can do a whole lot of things, but if you are not embodying the version of you who is happy, then you will be “doing” all the things for a very long time.
There are two ways to look at this, a more spiritual law of attraction kind of way and a science quantum physics kind of way.
But I’m going to talk about neither.
What I’m saying here is that who you are being, as in on an identity level, determines your values, your beliefs, your thoughts, your emotions which create your actions, behaviors and habits and the physical results you get.
If happiness is what you’re after and all the things that come along with it, the fastest route there is embodying a happy person.
Yes, by embodying a happy person you have reached your goal of “finding your happy”! #winning
You’re probably thinking something along the lines of “yeah well if I could be happy then I would already be. Duh.”
And to you I say, here are some other questions to help get the happiness ball rolling:
- What values do happy people have?
- What habits do happy people have?
- What can I do today to be happier?
- What are some things I can give up to be happier?
- What type of mindset do happy people have?
5. How Will I Know When I Get There?
How will you know when you get there?
A valid question.
Happiness looks different for everyone.
To some it’s a feeling, to others it’s a sound or something you see, heck, maybe to someone else it’s a taste or a smell.
Just like any other goal or outcome you desire, you need to know when you’ve reached it. When it’s real for you.
Once you know that, build on it.
Keep the happiness train a-rollin’!
Celebrate your dang self!
