It’s no secret that we love seeing what other people do.

Their habits, their routines, what kind of toothpaste they use, what they listen to on the radio, we want to know it all.

We’re so curious about what successful people do to be successful and you already know that those types of videos, blog posts, and resources are a dime a dozen.

So, for this post, I’m flipping success habits on their head and reverse-engineering the habits of successful people by looking at what successful people are not wasting their time on.

Because I believe that sometimes you need to know what NOT to do in order to figure out what to do. This way you can examine your own habits from a birds-eye view and understand what you can do differently to see more success in your own life.

Here are 8 habits to stop wasting your time on if you want to be successful in life.

8 Habits Successful People Don’t Waste Their Time On

1. Not Having Clear Goals

Knowing where you are makes deciding where you want to go much easier.

Think of goal setting like driving in a car. You sit in your car, turn it on and type into your GPS where you want to end up and almost like magic, you are given directions to the easiest and quickest route.

If your GPS didn’t know your current location it wouldn’t be able to find the fastest route to your new destination.

Having clear goals gives you a clear picture of what actions to take so that you don’t end up staying stuck right where you are year after year.

Look at where you are right now then start asking yourself where you want to be in the next 3 months, 6 months, a year, whatever.

Then start making a plan to get there.

2. Doubting Yourself

Successful people do not waste time doubting themselves, focusing on negative self-talk or thoughts or worrying about what other people think of them.

Period.

I know this one may sting a bit but it’s one habit that has to go.

Because this is one habit that will immediately put you right back to where you were and will not let you move any further.

The biggest fear is to do something that won’t work and will fail.

What if I told you that failure is the fastest way to success?

If you try something and it doesn’t work, great! Now you know what not to do next time.

If it does work, great! Now you know what works.

If you find yourself doubting your abilities, or worrying if you’ll fail, begin dismantling these feelings by asking yourself questions.

What is the worst thing that could happen?

Why is that the worst thing that could happen?

Is it really that bad?

If you want to move forward you have to take action regardless of the doubt and the fear creeping up and the more time and energy you give to your doubts, the more they will control your life.

 

 

3. Scrolling Social Media

You already knew this was coming.

Social media is a great way to build relationships with people, to build a business online and to show off your authentic self BUT it’s also a great way to waste time and energy instead of doing the things that will actually help you be successful in life.

With all the being said I think there are two ways that social media scrolling can be used.

Mindless scrolling to catch up with the people that you look up, make you feel good, etc.

And scrolling social media to avoid your own life, your own problems, to escape, to numb, to compare, to troll…you get the gist.

I’m not saying either of these two reasons to scroll are “good” or “bad”. That is up to you.

The point is to get more mindful about why you scroll on social media and to understand how to actually use it to your advantage.

If it’s keeping you stuck, it’s time to stop.

 

4. Multi-Tasking

I was always told multi-tasking was something to be proud of.

You can get more done in less time.

That’s good, right?

Well, no. Multi-tasking can actually hinder your productivity, increase mistakes and not to mention it takes a lot more time and energy which is extremely draining.

Our brains are built to focus on one thing at a time.

So when you put too many things in front of it, your brain tries to figure out both but ends up not fully understanding anything.

Focus on one task at a time. 

Begin with the hardest task at the beginning of the day when your brain is most awake and then end your day with the tasks that require less energy and time.

 

5. Mindless Living Or Living without Intention 

Time is the one resource that is not renewable. We cannot make more of it and we cannot get back what we’ve used.

Making time the most precious gift in our lives.

Before you roll your eyes too far back into your head think about this, most people are living life on autopilot.

They get up, eat, go to work, come home, sleep. Rinse and repeat.

Maybe there are a few nights out thrown in there but for the most part, they’re living life without intention and without thinking.

Great so how do we disrupt this pattern?

You live with intention.

Living mindfully or with intention simply just means that everything you do in life has a purpose.

Even if that purpose is to just chill out on the couch with some popcorn and chips while watching your favorite late-night Tv.

Driving in the car can mean listening to a new podcast or audiobook instead of the radio.

You get to decide what purpose you’ll attach to your habits but the point is to break the cycle and create a pattern interrupt to recognize what you’re doing, why you’re doing it as well as what you’re thinking.

 

6. Setting Boundaries

You already know how precious your time is but second to time is your energy.

Seriously.

If your energy is being sucked by everything and everyone around you it’s going to extremely difficult to show up as the person that you need to show up as in your life.

This means saying no to things instead of saying yes to everything.

Avoiding spending with people who complain, drain and expend all their energy on what they don’t like.

Doing things that do light you up and make you feel fulfilled instead of doing things that don’t.

Understand that boundaries are necessary for you to live a life that makes you happy. They are not bad or mean or hurtful.

You cannot pour from an empty cup.

Secure your own oxygen mask before assisting others.

I’m sure there are other cliche sayings about this but practice some self-care and set some boundaries!

 

7. Staying Stuck in Problem Based Thinking

If you only see the problem, that is all you will experience in your reality.

It is not your external reality that creates your internal thoughts, it is your internal thoughts that create your external reality.

This is really, really important.

People that are successful in life do not, and I repeat, do not waste their time looking at the problem for any longer than they need to.

If you are constantly saying things like,

“Why is this happening to me?”

“Why does this stuff always happen?”

“I have no idea how this is even going work.”

“There’s no possible solution.”

That is problem-based thinking.

And it’s not helping anyone. You see your subconscious mind takes everything literally and takes your thoughts and words in as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So if you focus on the problem too long, your subconscious mind will continue to only see the problem and will not help you find the solution.

Keeping you stuck right where you are.

Instead, look at the problem just long enough to ask yourself what the solution is or how to find it.

8. Waiting for Permission or Seeking Validation to Start

No one else’s validation for what you are doing and who you are being will ever feel as good as your own.

Stop waiting for someone to give you permission to start living your life because guess what, it’s not coming. It will never happen.

This can be one of the most crippling feelings in the world.

And it’s something that can keep you stuck, frustrated, confused and lost for years.

The truth is this, if you want to be successful in whatever venture you want to pursue, you’re going to have to jump into the unknown with the tenacity to keep going regardless of the outcome.

You’re also going to have to do it without the permission or the validation you think you need to do it.

It’s all fun and games to look at what successful people do and don’t do but at the end of the day, nothing will help us get to where we want to be if we don’t have the right mindset in place.

If you believe you can do it, you will find a way.

If you believe you can’t, you will find an excuse.
